In school, I always knew when the substitute teachers got to my name because they would take a long pause after saying “When…?”

My name is Wenxin Chen, a common name in China, but not in the U.S..

I love my name. However, many people, even my friends, have difficulty pronouncing it.

In my personal life, when I try to tell people my name, they always ask me to repeat it. Then again. Then again.

Sometimes I gets annoyed by this.

I feel like people don’t accept and respect me if they don’t care about how to say my name correctly, or even come up with a simple nickname. It feels like there is a wall between us, but no one makes the effort to break it.

From my personal experience, people usually judge each other by appearances, accents, and names. For example, some people are reluctant to talk to me because they don’t want to mispronounce my name (I understand that they don’t want to be rude by saying my name wrong).

What’s worse is that when I was in a ceremony, the presenter mispronounced my name, and I didn’t know it was supposed to be me. That was one of the worse experiences that I had with my name.

Sometimes I even think about changing my name.

However, the good thing about having a difficult name is that the teachers do not call me up if they don’t know how to say my name. Because they don’t want to be rude and unprofessional, they won’t call me up until they learn my name.

Over time, I came to accept my name. I understand that my name represents who I am and where I come from.
