RELAXER

British alternative band alt-J is releasing a new album on June 2, 2017. The album was teased on March 3 with a video titled: 00110011 01110111 01110111. The title translates from binary to 3WW: the title of the first song on the new album, RELAXER. The actual song 3WW was released a few weeks later.

Even later, on April 13, they released a music video for 3WW. The video uses a grayscale aesthetic and features a lot of very artistic shots. The art style goes well with the song and the storyline of the video. More recently released was the music video for the second song, In Cold Blood. The video at first appears to follow a cute mouse, but it quickly takes a dark turn, characteristic of alt-J. The dark twist takes the form of the bloody aftermath of a shootout, appearing just in time for the amazing brass midway through the song.

Alt-J has also released an accompanying website for RELAXER. They have created a landscape that you can explore, discovering various videos and pictures relating to the album. Interestingly, one of the videos featured is the first 30 minutes of the 1998 video game LSD. The game, as evident from the title, is meant to simulate a multi-day LSD trip. Various imagery and landscapes from the game appear on the RELAXER website, and the album art appears to also be based off of the art style from LSD. The music released so far doesn’t appear to follow this LSD theme, so it is interesting that alt-J went with this design choice. They may release more fitting music later on, and they will likely release more information in the weeks preceding the June 2 album release.
