On Tuesday, May 16, the official sequel to 2013’s “Injustice” will launch. The game was announced on June 8, 2016, and many of the mysteries surrounding the trailer have been answered. The game will release for PS4 and XBox one, but, regrettably, not PC.

The announcement trailer shows some cast members fighting, and their suits becoming upgraded periodically. This has been revealed as the “Gear” system. After each battle, players will earn new equipment, powers and cosmetics to add to their character. This gear increases stats, variety and style. As players learn their favorite character, it grows with them. A similar system was employed in Smash 4, but it did not reach the scope which the Gear system in “Injustice 2″ has.

Most of the official roster for the game has been released, save for nine characters. Characters not included in the previous Injustice are: Supergirl, Atrocitus, Gorilla Grodd, Deadshot, Blue Beetle, Poison Ivy, Braniac, Robin, Black Canary, Swamp Thing, Cheetah, Dr. Fate, Firestorm, Captain Cold, Scarecrow, and Darkseid.

Those who will not be returning to the franchise: Ares, Deathstroke, Doomsday, Hawkgirl, Killer Frost, Lex Luthor, Nightwing, Raven, Sinestro, Shazam, and Solomon Grundy. This, however, could change, as there are still nine characters left to announce.

Finally, those returning to the franchise: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, The Flash, Bane, Catwoman, Cyborg, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Black Adam, and most recently Joker. The Joker’s announcement came as a surprise to many, as the characters who are not returning more or less match up with who died in the story. Needless to say, the Joker died in the campaign of Injustice.

For those unfamiliar, the premise of “Injustice” is essentially that Superman goes insane due to the death of Lois Lane and their unborn son. He then gangs up with several other Justice League members and some villains and becomes the tyrannical dictator of the entire world. Batman then leads a rebellion against Superman. Chaos ensues, and several characters die, including Shazam and Joker. These opposing factions are dubbed “The Regime” and “The Insurgency”.

The premise of “Injustice 2″ hasn’t been completely laid out, but it has been revealed in pieces through the “Shattered Alliances” trailers. It appears that Gorilla Grodd will lead his own faction, known as “The Society”. The Regime and the Insurgency make a comeback, and Superman gets out of prison at some point, somehow. It also seems that, later in the story, Superman and Braniac will fight for control of the world.

Furthermore, “Injustice 2″ will come with an accompanying mobile version, just like its predecessor. Pre-registering will get you Catwoman for free. The console game will release as a Standard Version, a Deluxe Version, and an Ultimate Version. The Deluxe Version comes with three DLC fighters, a premiere skin for Supergirl, and an exclusive gear shader pack. The Ultimate Version comes with all of that, plus six more DLC fighters, premiere skins for Green Lantern and and The Flash, and another exclusive gear shader pack. Additionally, pre-ordering the game unlocks Darkside instantly.
